Out Of Nothing – “Everyone Perishes” – Before I even opened the packaging or looked at the cover of this CD I knew it was a SKA. The titles of the songs are a dead give away, “Armstrong”, “Dub Song”, & “Voodoo” to name a few. So I was intrigued, I enjoy a good Ska band as long as they don’t become overly theatrical and just plain cheesy or they lack energy and substance. Well Out Of Nothing ends up being just kind of boring. Maybe I’ve just heard too many great bands, didn’t get laid last night or woke up on the wrong side of the cave. Whichever it was this seven song album has about as much flavor as a matzo ball with about as much personality as a glazed donut. Notice I didn’t say a plain donut; because there is a little variation with nice horn play, but just nothing that puts the jimmies on to give it that extra something. I don’t know, maybe if they played the music a little faster and the singer took stood out as a front man rather than a back drop for the music (like he does a little of in “Eulogy for a comic book hero”) they would be more interesting? With all of that said I enjoy the energy of “Clusterfuck”. Otherwise they’re just another glazed donut in the Krispy Kreme of Ska bands.
